Gulp, the World’s Largest Stop Motion Animation – Ten Years On.

Can you believe it’s been ten years since we were asked by animation giants Aardman and Nokia to make the world’s largest stop motion animation ‘Gulp’ using our sand art?!

Back in 2011 BC (before Claire) our team of sand artists looked very different and Jamie enlisted Tom Bolland, Andy Moss and Andy Firth to join him at Pendine Sands off the coast of Pembrokeshire for the sand drawing animation.

Working with the Aardman animators and filmed using just a Nokia N8 mobile phone – all be it, suspended from a cherry picker several metres in the air – our beach art was a huge part of the animation ‘Gulp’ telling the tale of a fishing trip with a twist. A team of volunteer animators from UWE assisted and helped everything go smoothly.

Sand drawing animation has never been attempted since and this remains the world’s largest stop motion animation with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet, and a place in the Guinness World Records!

Our sand drawing has come on in leaps and bounds in the intervening ten years, with sand art projects such as the 1 km sand drawing we created on the sands of Red Wharf Bay for Land Rover and our epic series of sand drawings with director Danny Boyle and 14-18NOW commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War – Pages of the Sea.

Imagine what we could do now – we can’t wait to have another go at some more animated beach art!
