Usually when we are at the seaside it is the middle of summer and we are making one of our sand drawings on a beach, or running table top sand sculpture workshops with the waves crashing behind us. However when we were asked to go to Redcar in December we decided to bring something suitably chilly – vans full of ice sculptures for their Christmas ice sculpture trail.
Our team of professional ice sculptors had been working hard at our ice carving studio in Yorkshire, beavering away with their ice sculpting tools and creating seven fantastic ice sculptures that would be sited all around Redcar for families to find whilst exploring the town centre. We brought along a whole host of Christmas characters for the ice sculpture trail including a penguin, snowman, reindeer, nutcracker, snowflake, and the big guy himself – Santa. There was a competition to spot all the ice sculptures and win a prize, and street performers and theatre acts entertaining people of all ages.
The ice carvers brought along some blocks of ice and their chainsaws and live carved an ice sleigh for Father Christmas.
We also sculpted one of our famous ice post boxes, which are popular at events around the UK – even more popular are the Sand In Your Eye elves who helped children to write their letters to Father Christmas and pop them into the ice post box. The elves then made sure the letters reached the North Pole in time for Christmas.
We can’t wait to visit Redcar again – everybody was so friendly and the atmosphere was magical. Thanks go to Lisa Storey at Redcar & Cleveland Council who made everything go very smoothly. We were even interviewed by the Culture Vulture, which added an extra bit of Christmas sparkle to this ice sculpture extravaganza.
