Skegness - Replica Sand Sculpture to celebrate Premier Inn's 800th Hotel

When we travel to do our sand sculptures and sand drawings around the UK we stay in a lot of hotels, so we know quite a bit about them. This summer to celebrate the opening of the Premier Inn on Skegness’ Grand Parade, we were asked to make a replica sand sculpture of the hotel, which is the 800^th Premier Inn in the country!

The launch would be a big PR event, with the local MP Matt Warman attending. With this in mind, we suggested making one of our pre carved sand sculptures. These are carved in our studio and then transported to locations around the country. They can then stay there as long as you want, and with a bit of tlc can last indefinitely. It saves a lot of clients the mess and bother of having sand sculptors working onsite, although we are house trained and do tidy up after ourselves!

To carve a whole hotel would take a tonne of sand, usually our premade sand carvings, such as those made for the Grosvenor Shopping Centre in Chester and Herbert the Gnome for the Metrocentre, Gateshead, weigh a lot less so once the sand art hotel was made we had to cut it in two to transport it to Skegness and put it back together once we got to the actual hotel.

The Premier Inn, Skegness has 80 rooms, so Rich got to work carving all the windows into the sand sculpture. It also has an onsite restaurant, the Steamboat Cookhouse & Pub, which also featured on the sand carving. Unfortunately, Rich, Jamie and James were too busy on the day of the event to take advantage of the unlimited cooked breakfasts at the restaurant!

After all the photographs had been taken, Rich and Jamie moved the sculpture into the foyer of the hotel. This was made easier by there not being any steps or kerbs in the way and checking with the building manager beforehand that the weight loading of the foyer floor would withstand this chunky bit of sand art. Here it stayed until December, when the Sand In Your Eye team returned to take it down so the hotel’s Christmas tree could go up.
