Sand Sculptors Tom and Jamie arrive in Skegness

Sand Sculptors Tom and Jamie arrive in Skegness

This May bank holiday weekend, we were invited by Skegness Council and Anglian Water down to the pier to host a sand sculpture competition! Although we were a bit upset when they told us we couldn’t enter ourselves, we soon got over it and planned some workshops for all the families who were enjoying the seaside.

We set up base in Butlins and while Flossy and Grandma enjoyed the entertainment, Jamie, Claire and myself got ready for our first trip to the beach of the year. The weather was much better than expected and on the first day we had lots of people come and make some amazing sea creatures in the sculpture workshops while Jamie wrestled with Tick-Tock the Alligator!

On the second day we began with some more workshops and Claire, inspired by the seal sanctuary just down the road, made a lovely sculpture called Sammy the Seal. Despite the wind, loads of people came to hone their sculpting skills ready for the competition in the afternoon.

We were very excited to meet The Jolly Fisherman and the Mayor who arrived to judge the competition and it was wonderful to see so many creative sand sculptures made by people who had never tried it before. After a hard afternoon of sculpting, the contenders eagerly awaited the Mayor’s decision and to see who would win the grand trophy!

There were so many great sculptures and enthusiastic artists that we had to award a special prize of the coveted Golden Spade to two young ladies. Well Done! Who made a beautiful octopus covered in shells all on their own.

It was a real pleasure to be a part of such a lovely event and we hope it will be back, bigger and better next year!
