The run up to Christmas is always an exciting time, so we were thrilled to be invited by Sunderland Bid, to take part in their Ice Festival which took place on 16th and 17th of December.

The festival was a free outdoor event which took place alongside some other exciting festive activities around Sunderland City Centre.

On the run up to the event the team spent a week in the freezers carving 5 stunning ice sculptures, including a Snow Queen, a cheeky snowman and one of Santas’ reindeer. Plus, an ice post box, created especially for letters to be sent express delivery to the North Pole.

Once the vans were loaded Jamie, Dave, Ames, Dan and Ed set off up to Sunderland the night before the event so they could get the ice unloaded into a temporary freezer unit hired especially for the event. After the ice was dropped off the team headed to the Air BnB to get rested before the big weekend!

It was an early start on Saturday. Whilst the sculptures and the live carve were set up, Elf Ames was busy decorating the beautiful Teepee Sunderland Bid had hired tor the Letter Writing Workshop.

Despite the windy weather the weekend was a complete success. Alongside our own elves there were special appearances from both The Grinch and the big man (Santa) himself. Adults and children alike enjoyed posing for selfies as a real life snow angel in front of the giant ice wings, and by the end of each day, the ice post box was overflowing with letters for the North Pole.
